After 7 October 2023 and the complex and on-going military and political responses, the debates about “who is a Jew,” or perhaps who is Jewish enough to be a Jew, have heightened. Nothing new here. But what has shifted, as it always shifts, is the political and cultural context of this ancient debate. Our moment, with its generational and political shifts and realignments, with the new-old meanings associated not only with antisemitisms but with anti-antisemitisms, means that asking “are you Jewish enough to be a Jew” demands close and often uncomfortable analysis. Who decides and why?
Sander Gilman, whose classic study of 1986 Jewish Self-Hatred and his forthcoming study of Antisemitisms will ask why such questions are part of being Jewish in the present moment.
Sander Gilman is Distinguished Professor of the Liberal Arts and Sciences as well as Professor of Psychiatry. A cultural and literary historian, he is the author or editor of over eighty books.
